Bengaluru witnessed a bizarre incident when a Tamil Nadu policeman thrashed his daughter publicly in the city's Ulsoor street on Thursday, even as the Bangalore police was celebrating 'International Women's Day' at the city police commissioner's office.

The 25-year-old woman was beaten by Raja Ram, currently under suspension, as he angry over her her affair with a boy, an allegation the woman reportedly denied.

"Two girls noticed Ram beating his daughter. The incident was watched by some 30 people, but none of them tried to rescue her. I had to contact the Madurai police and get in touch with the police commissioner there. I was told that Ram was a special sub-inspector and was suspended two months ago," Waseem, an eye-witness, told Deccan Herald.

Her mother, a teacher in Madurai, did not stop her husband from beating the woman, who is reportedly working in Bengaluru.

The victim's parents wanted to take her back to Madurai to marry her off at the earliest, since she had brought "shame upon the family".

She got help later by two women driving through the spot in a car; they also informed the police.

The police arrived at the spot after about half-an-hour and took the three to the Ulsoor police station for questioning. They were let off later, since it was a family affair and they preferred not to lodge a complaint.

The incident evoked anger and criticism from all over the country after one of the two women posted about the incident on Facebook.
