After leading Australia to a 5-0 victory in the Ashes over England at home, and speeding his way through an away Test series 2-1 win in South Africa, Mitchell Johnson will mostly likely join his team late for the World T20 championship in Bangladesh due to an infected toe.

Johnson had a cut on his right toe in the third and final Test of the South Africa tour because of which he was rested for the T20 series. The cut has now been infected and the health of the fast bowler cannot be risked. Australia begin their campaign in Dhaka on 23 March against Pakistan.

"Mitch has been home in Perth recovering from the Test series against South Africa but has developed an infection as a result of a cut he had on his right big toe after the 3rd Test [against South Africa]," Cricket Australia's chief medical officer Justin Paoloni said.

"He is receiving treatment but his departure to Bangladesh for the ICC World T20 may be delayed until we are happy that the infection has resolved and his toe fully recovered."

Johnson has had a dream run this summer picking up 59 wickets in eight Tests and Australia wouldn't want their in-form player to miss out on the World Cup.

Talking of Johnson's bowling, former Australian fast bowler, Brett Lee said earlier this week the 32-year-old had become the new face of Australian cricket.

"Mitch has been outstanding and has led the turnaround with his moustache," Lee said with a smile. "He has been fast and aggressive and has changed the face of Australian cricket."
