"Thalaivaa" is doing good business in Tamil Nadu although the film hit theatres 11 days after the worldwide release. In particular, "Thalaivaa" has topped the Chennai box office despite a new film releasing on Friday (23 August). The Vijay-starrer released on 20 August ( Tuesday) three days ahead of the release of new flick "Desingu Raja". However, the romantic-comedy entertainer has not affected "Thalaivaa" collections at the Chennai box office.

"Thalaivaa" has been the first choice of the public during the debut weekend, followed by "Desingu Raja", according to senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai. Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express", which was ruling the Chennai box office before "Thalaivaa" was released, has now been pushed to the third spot.

Surprisingly, Suriya's "Singam 2", which hit the screens more than a month ago, is still running successfully in Tamil Nadu. The action entertainer recently completed its 50-day run in several theatres across TN.

2. Desingu Raja

3. Chennai Express

4. The Conjuring

5. Singam 2

The first two-day collection of "Thalaivaa" is estimated to be around ₹1.68 crore in Chennai. The film has also performed well in other parts of Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, Trichy and Salem. The action-drama flick is expected to have fetched better collections during its first weekend in Tamil Nadu. The official figures are yet to be announced.

"Thalaivaa" is likely to rake in good revenue during the second week till Friday (30 August) after which there might be a slump in collections due to five new releases (Aug 30- 1 September) - "Thanga Meengal", "Ponmaalai Pozhudhu", "Summa Nachunu Irukku", "Anjal Thurai" and "Mathapoo".

Still, Vijay's film has a good chance to fare well as the other five films are releasing without any publicity or promotions. None of these films have a big star cast to boost its performance at the box office.

However, director Ram's "Thanga Meengal", produced by Gautham Menon's Photon Kathas, has received rave reviews from the press and a few directors. It remains to be seen if Ram's film, which is based on father-daughter relationship will play spoilsport for "Thalaivaa", a commercial mass entertainer.
