At the end of April Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said that the company will be taking a new approach with its Wii U console, as Wired reported. Nintendo will be targeting the hardcore gaming community more directly than with its previous release, which appealed to causal gamers and family-style playing.

"We have not designed [Nintendo 3DS and Wii U] to be more improved versions of their predecessors," Iwata said at an investor briefing last month, according to Wired. "We have designed them so that they can realize what has been possible."
The company began to take this shift when the 3DS portable console was release last year. This was a deliberate strategy, Iwata said.
"Regrettably, what we prioritized in order to reach out to the new audience on [Wii and DS] was a bit too far from what we prioritized for those who play games as their hobby," he said. "Consequently, we presume some people feel that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games have been released."
Nintendo's Wii U is expected to launch in November 2012, and is rumored to feature an IBM Power-based multi-core microprocessor CPU, and a custom version of AMD Radeon RV 770 for its GPU, according to WiiUSpecs.com. The next-generation console will also support up to 1080p video output and internal flash memory, said to be 8 GB in size.
Last January Nintendo's Wii topped 34 million units sold in the United States, reported 1UP.com. The DS "family," which includes everything from the original DS model up to the DSi, had sold over 47 million units at that time, making it the nation's biggest-selling gaming device.
