100 Greatest Books for Kids: List Includes Harry Potter, Leaves Out ‘Twilight’

Scholastic's Parent & Child magazine unveiled the final selections for their list of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids, and E.B. White's classic tale "Charlotte's Web" nabbed the top spot.

The top 100 books for kids include "Matilda" by Roald Dahl (#41) and "Grumpy Bird" by Jeremy Tankard (#88).

"Of the more than 500 titles we considered for our 100 Greatest, Charlotte's Web seemed to have touched the most readers," the company wrote.

The magazine's editor, Nick Friedman, said the list is meant to generate "controversy and conversation," according to a USA Today report.

Classic favorites that made the list include "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett (#36), "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame (#14), and "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery (#11).

Popular modern reads on the list include "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling (#6), "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins (#33), "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket (#57), and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney (#38).
