Seized was Money for Poor Candidates: Pratibha Patil's Son
Congress MLA and President Pratibha Patil's son Raosaheb Shekhawat has said that the amount of Rs one crore seized as unaccounted cash by the state police was meant for distribution among economically weak candidates for the forthcoming Mumbai Municipal Corporation polls.
Earlier on Saturday, the state police seized the cash from Maharashtra's Amravati district, media reports said.
According to reports, the cash was hidden in a car bonnet.
The police had also detained two people in connection to the case.
Shekhawat said that he had sought money from the state Congress committee to distribute it among 87 candidates who were mostly "women and poor".
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed Congress over the issue and said that the party was trying to use the cash to influence voters before the elections.
