In what is said to be a miracle, a five-year-old girl was pulled alive from 10 meters (33 feet) of deep snow following a massive avalanche that hit houses in the remote mountain village of Restelica, southern Kosovo, on Sunday.

The rescuers cheered as they found the girl, Amsera, alive in the rubble of the house in which her parents were already buried dead. Seven of her relatives were also killed. The rescuers said the girl was “pulled from the womb of the dead,” Klan Kosovo TV reported.

An exclusive footage aired on Klan Kosovo TV showed the rescue team covering the girl with blankets as she was taken out. She survived the disaster with minor injuries.

Amsera was sleeping when the avalanche struck her village. She was found when rescuers heard her voice and the ringing of a mobile phone. The child is currently in the hospital and doctors say she is in good health, according to the local television.

Mountainous terrain dominates Kosovo, southeastern Europe, putting the place at a greater risk of avalanches during snowy winters. The European cold snap this season has claimed hundreds of lives.
