While the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has banned import of toys until January 2010, import of milk and certain milk products have been banned until November 24, 2009.

DGFT had earlier banned import of Chinese toys in January on health grounds after concerns over their safety were raised in developed countries following the discovery of lead and other toxic chemicals in Chinese toys, ingestion of which could prove fatal to children. However, after Beijing questioned the restrictions on the ground that New Delhi did not put such curbs on similar toys imported from other countries, the import ban was partially relaxed in March.

However, this week, DGFT again revived the ban, saying only toys that come with a certificate from laboratories accredited to the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) will be allowed for import.

"Import of toys is prohibited up to January 23, 2010 and until further orders. However, toys conforming to international health safety standards can be imported," DGFT said in a notification.
