An explosion and gunfire has been reported at Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan.

A doctor from the hospital said that a blast occurred at the entrance gate of the hospital and the attackers then swarmed inside the building.

Security officials have reached the spot. There are reports of ongoing fighting between security forces and attackers at the third and fourth floors of the hospital building.

"The Sardar Daud Khan hospital has been attacked. The attackers have entered the hospital. We don't have any more details for now," defence ministry spokesman Daulat Waziri told AFP.

A hospital staff member wrote on Facebook: "Attackers are inside the hospital. Pray for us."

No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The latest attack has come a week after at least 16 people were killed in  Taliban suicide assaults on two police compounds in Kabul.

More details are awaited.
