Canadian electronics company DataWind, maker of the indigenous Aakash tablet, has launched a new tablet PC called UbiSlate 7C+ Edge, on Tuesday.

UbiSlate 7C+ Edge sports a 7-inch capacitive touch screen with 800x480 pixel resolution and runs on Android v4.0 mobile OS Ice Cream Sandwich powered by Cortex A-8 processor with 1GHz clock speed.

The tablet is currently available through online shopping portal for ₹5,999.

Lately, DataWind is facing a staggered supply of Aakash-2 tablets. This production issue almost reached a point where the Indian government considered discontinuing the country's first indigenous tablet project.

According to reports, out of one lakh tablets ordered by the government, DataWind has delivered only 17,100 tablets to IIM-Bombay (executing body for the project).

DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli has said that 29,400 tablets are currently on their way to the IIM-B campus, whereas another 23,500 are pending for shipment. The remaining 30,000-odd devices are in the final stages of assembly process.

Union HRD (Human Resource Development) minister Pallam Raju had reportedly said that the ministry would take a call on the future prospects of Aakash tablet after they go through the report from Rajendra Pawar, who is authorized as the head of the Review Committee to study the feasibility of Aakash tablet in the government's flagship education program called 'National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology'.

The government has reportedly put the third-generation Aakash-3 project on hold. It remains to be seen if DataWind will be able to deliver remaining Aakash-2 tablets before the 31 March deadline.
