South Africa vs Australia
“This is the best squad we've ever assembled in Twenty20 cricket," says Shane Watson. Reuters

Eight years ago, on this very day, the world witnessed one of the greatest matches ever played in the history of world cricket when South Africa chased down an epic score of 434 set by Australia with one ball to spare at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Can the excitement of that day be recreated today when the same teams face each other in the shortest format at Kingsmead, Durban? Perhaps it is possible, given the nail-biting Test series they are coming from, and should the skies allow play, as the T20 series opener in Port Elizabeth was washed out due to heavy downpour.

Shane Watson, the Rajasthan Royals' newly appointed skipper in the IPL, will be one of the key players in Bangladesh, and the all-rounder claims the present Australia squad to be the most balanced side he has ever been a part of.

"This is the best squad we've ever assembled in Twenty20 cricket," said Watson. "We've got the most balanced side I've ever been involved in. We really do have firepower in our batting order, all the way down to No.10. We've got high-quality opening bowlers, death bowlers and spinners. We have versatility. In all conditions, against any opposition we can match up really well.

"Twenty20 cricket is fickle, but if you have a lot of match-winners in your team you've got more of a chance of it being someone's day."

Before starting their T20 campaign in subcontinent conditions on 23 March against Pakistan, Australia have two warm-up matches to get settled. Hence, even if the series against South Africa is washed out, Australia do not have too many concerns in terms of preparation.

"The more cricket you play as a group, the better prepared you are going to be heading into such a big tournament," Watson said. "We've got a couple of practice matches in Bangladesh. If we do have a week off it'll actually be more a chance to freshen bodies up and really make sure we're ready to go."

The Proteas camp too, have all eyes on the silverware as captain Faf du Plessis said before the match in Durban.

"The bigger picture is the World Cup," Du Plessis admitted. "We need to consider giving the key guys who have had a tough Test series a rest in some of the games. Someone like AB has played a lot of cricket and has been non-stop for the last three weeks, with the bat, gloves and on the field. From a player management point of view it's important to make sure that the World Cup is the focus point."

In playing those key players, it turned out that Imran Tahir is the captain's pick as his trump card.

"The success of Tahir in the T20 World Cup is going to hugely determine how well we do," Du Plessis added. "I know conditions in Durban probably don't suit him - it's wet, raining and the ball will be a bit slippery. But it doesn't matter how well or how badly he bowls here, it won't change how important he is for us in Bangladesh."
