Suriya's movie "24" has made superb collection at the U.S. box office in the first weekend and it has become the fastest $1 million mark grosser in the country in 2016, beating the record of Vijay's "Theri."

The Vikram Kumar directed sci-fi thriller was one of the much-hyped and highly-anticipated Tamil movies of 2016. The hype surrounding "24" had created lot of demand for its overseas theatrical rights and several distribution houses in race for them. Finally, Cine Galaxy acquired its rights for a whopping price and released in it in over 270 screens in Tamil and Telugu languages across North America on May 6.

Its overseas distributors held premiere shows on Thursday night and the film registered very good response from audience in North America. The movie "24" collected approximately $157,905 in the U.S. and $6,440 in Canada, taking its total collection to $164,345 in these countries. The flick went on strength to strength on Friday and Saturday.

The Suriya and Samantha starrer has done superb business on Sunday and as per early estimates, "24" has collected approximately $140,663 at the U.S. box office on its third day, taking its first weekend total to $1,029,123. Midwest Movies tweeted, #24TheMovie Sunday hourly gross $140,663 and total adds up to ONE MILLION.. @Suriya_offl joins 1M club (Rajini, Kamal, Vikram and Vijay).

The movie "24" has become the highest grosser for the actor in the country, beating the record of "7am Arivu." It has become the first $1 million grosser for Suriya, while director Vikram Kumar scored his second film after "Manam." Andhra Box Office tweeted, "#24TheMovie with equal contribution from Tamil &Telugu, surpassed $1Mn in North America Weekend. 2nd $1Mn for Vikram Kumar & 1st for Suriya."

Vijay's "Theri" raked in $917,469 at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend and took the next three days to surpass the $1 million dollar mark in the North America. It was the first Tamil film to achieve this feat in 2016. Now, "24" has beaten the record of the Vijay and Samantha starrer.
