Toyota Prius, one of the early models to make use of hybrid technology, has unveiled its new generation vehicle at Las Vegas, USA. The 2016 Prius is in its fourth generation and has a different take on design compared to the current model.

The new Prius has taken its design cue from Mirai and looks sharp and angular. The new Prius has standard LED headlamps and bold character lines along the side from the front fenders. Apart from the current six colors, the new Prius will be available in seventh colour which Toyota calls Hypersonic Red.

Prius 2016 is the first global production car to make use of Toyota's new shared platform --Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) -- and the company touts TNGA's lower center of gravity for better handling.

The 2016 Prius is 60 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 20 mm lower than the outgoing model and the extra length provides spacious cabin for the passengers. The hybrid car comes with new rear double wishbone suspension, which Toyota claims will deliver better connection to the road and feedback from the steering.

The safety features are of paramount focus for the new Prius. The vehicle comes with Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and automatic high beam lights.

Toyota is tight-lipped on the specifications but they do promise a 10% increase in fuel economy and a 40% increase in thermal efficiency.

The third generation Prius, which is currently sold in India, is powered by a 1.8-litre pertol engine that generates 98hp and with the added power of the electric motor generates a total of 134hp. The Prius is currently sold in Z5 and Z6 variants, which is priced at Rs 38.10 lakh and 39.80 lakh(ex-showroom, Delhi), respectively.
