The year 2014 saw several films with the heroes playing dual roles. From Vijay's "Kaththi" to Rajinikanth's "Lingaa," check the list of films which had the lead star appearing in double roles.

Kaththi

"Kaththi" had Vijay playing two roles – one as an activist and the other one as a small-time thief. Vijay rocked in both the roles and his performance won accolades from the critics as well as audience alike. His performance was considered as one of the best in his film career.

The film received a fantastic response and fared well at the box office. It has emerged as the biggest hit in Vijay's career and the film is the highest grossing Tamil flick of 2014 till date.

Directed by Murugadoss, "Kaththi" is an action thriller flick with Samantha, Sathish and Bollywood actor Neil Nithin Mukesh in supporting roles. The film's music is composed by Anirudh, while cinematography is handled by George C Williams.

Kochadaiiyaan

Superstar Rajinikanth appeared in a dual role in "Kochadaiiyaan," India's first 3D film using motion-capturing techniques. The star played the role of a father-son duo in the historic drama that released in May 2014.

Despite having Rajini in the lead role, "Kochadaiiyaan" failed to set the cash registers ringing. The film received flak for its substandard animation, though the film's director Soundarya was appreciated for bringing the motion capturing technique to India.

"Kochadaiiyaan" was Rajini's first release in the last four years. The actor will be next seen in the live action film "Lingaa."

Nimirnthu Nil

Jaya Ravi-starrer had the actor playing two roles – one that of an IT professional who crusades against corruption and another one as a cunning crook.

The actor's performance received appreciation with many citing it as the highlight of the film. "Nimirnthu Nil" fetched positive feedback from the audience. The film did decent business at the box office.

Tenaliraman

Comedian Vadivelu's "Tenaliraman" had the actor appearing in two characters–as king and as an intelligent minister.

The historic fictional film got mixed reviews from the critics and the response was average at the box office.

Lingaa

Rajinikanth-starrer "Lingaa" will be releasing this Friday (12 December). It is going to be a double treat for the fans as the actor will be seen in two roles. One of the characters will appear in the pre-independent era, while the other role will be seen in the present.

Directed by KS Ravi Kumar, "Lingaa" is an action drama with Sonakshi and Anushka playing the female leads. The film is set for a massive release and is expected to create new records in terms of collections.

The year 2015 will also witness a few Tamil films in which the heroes will be playing double roles. They include Kamal Haasan's "Uttama Villain," Vijay's "Vijay 58" and Sarath Kumar's "Sandamarutham."
